Hume BUG Westmeadows - Docklands ride 4/12/2011

On a day with a strong, cold, southerly wind, 5 cyclists (Greg, Dennis, Gavin, Graham and Kevin) congregated at Westmeadows Bakery and sat around chatting until they felt they had better get a move-on. After literally only a few metres of travel down the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail, they came to a sudden stop after riding through a patch of broken glass on the path and checking to ensure there was no broken glass stuck in their tyres. That’s one good use of cycle gloves!

Otherwise, it was an uneventful trip via the Gladstone Park detour and along the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail. The highlight was probably one cyclist needing to re-tie his saddle bag to stop it from falling off his bike. Oh, a tremendously exciting ride!

On arrival at Footscray Road, it was decided to stop the ride at Docklands instead of Williamstown, so we road over to The Coffee Club and ordered our cuppas. There, we peeled off, with one leaving before paying and the other four working feverishly to calculate each share of the bill. With one more leaving, the party was down to three, and it was decided to return along Moonee Ponds Creek Trail until Bell Street, where we would ride on-road alongside the railway line. We made a quick pace with the wind at our backs, and before long, Kevin took over the navigational duties from Greg and lead them over the creek and up past Pascoe Vale Station. With the gentle inclines of the smooth road, it was with minimal effort we arrived at Jacana Station and bade our farewells to each other.

The Hume BUG ride had been a little over 40km to that point, with a time of 2:12:31 at a rolling averaging of 18.6 km/hr.

Hume BUG Woodend - Craigieburn/Broadmeadows Ride 6/11/2011

11 Cyclists turned out for the ride today. Anita, Scott, Gavin, Graham, Mil, Babs, Iain, Kevin, Dennis, Steve, Greg. All made their way to the start point in Woodend either by train or by car. Those on the train were disappointed that they could'nt avail themselves to the first class option without occuring an additional expense, Mil however did enjoy his first coffee of the day.

After a brief photosession at Woodend Station the group set off on their journey. Taking advantage of the north wind a good pace was achieved out of Woodend. We headed down the old Calder Highway and turned off at Nursary Rd towards Macedon. Enjoying the scenery we found our way to Honour avenue and then to Mt Macedon Rd.
So far so good as we had'nt found ourselves lost. Next turn was Hamilton ave and the smell of Riddles Creek bakery was soon on everybodies mind. We arrived at 11.00am which meant our first leg of the journey took only 1 hour which was not bad for the scruffy bunch of riders. The mere fact that we had'nt gotten lost to this point was another bonus.

An early lunch for all except for Iain who had two lunches and the group was poised for the second leg of the journey. Heading out of Riddells Creek I'm sure we smelt some road kill but I could have been mistaken. We worked our way to Lancefield Rd and took advantage of the tail wind until we turned off at Konagadera Rd. Our first climb for the day was soon upon us. The sprinters broke away from the peleton in a burst of speed not seen since the penultimate leg of the TDF. The yellow jersey was in sight for one lucky son of a gun. The same son of a gun was destined to lead the group up the garden path when the breakaway became lost. Not to waste an opportunity however they did however enjoy the ambience of rural architectural dwellings.

Back on course thanks to Kevin who knew the track well and we were headed towards our second climb further along Konagadera Rd. Jocking for positions the peleton raced down the incline gathering speed for the ascent. A bit of indicistion part way up the group split into two. Eventually we decided which way to go. Unfortunately Iain dropped a bidon and had to go back down the hill to retrieve it. Hopefully he made it back up again because the group continued on towards their destination.

We made our way to Dennis's favorite roundabout in Mickelham Rd where the group split, some headed towards Mr Ridley Rd and others down Mickelham Rd. All up my computer read 89.40km at an average of 24.99kph. A special welcome to Babs who joined the group for the first time. Hopefully everybody enjoyed themselves and we hope to do this ride again. Excuse the spelling I hav'nt checked it.

Hume BUG Aitken Creek Safety Month Ride 23/10/2011

Written by Bill

Another fantastic day for cycling, probably the last mild one before it gets too warm.
I would like to welcome our first timers on today's ride: Helen, Charlie, Charline, Alexis, Riley and Frank. Although Frank did come on one longer ride before, this was his first short one with the Hume BUG.
In addition to the above riders our seasoned rider Kevin was there with bells on, Anita, Phil, Iain, Graham and Luke were there too. It was quite a group.
This is a social/beginners/family/kids ride, we proceeded at a nice and easy pace to the Waterside Cafe for a nice rest, then we continued on our journey back via Malcolm Creek to the start point at 11:00AM.
Until the next ride, 6th November "long ride" and 13th November "family ride", take care and happy cycling.

Westmeadows - Uni Hill Ride along Western Ring Road Path

At 9.00am, on a cool showery Sunday morning eight brave soles are eager to start the ride from Westmeadows Bakery to University Hill (Bundoora) but were quickly stopped before they started with a puncture to fix, but soon we headed off along the Moonee Ponds Creek, past the Broadmeadows Health to Jacana Station where we joined the Western Ring Road, where the ride was easy and quick until just over Sydney Road we were stopped to fix another puncture, with a few hands on the job the repair was done quickly and we were back on track in record time. We were lucky to arrive at our coffee break with out much rain (just a few light drops). After our coffee we headed back the way we come with a detour to Mt Cooper, Bundoora Park and along Darebin Creek path where we had a close encounter with our black & white feathered friend and soon back to the Western Ring Road for our return trip only to find it a lot harder with a strong headwind. We arrived back at Westmeadows Bakery about 2.00pm and 52km later, many thanks to the riders that braved weather on the day (which was better than expected) and who made it an enjoyable ride.

Unofficial Hume BUG ride to Docklands 4/9/2011

Some comments on the ride from Bill on the Hume BUG Facebook page (with some tidying up and additional comments by Kevin):
Kevin and I rode back from Docklands to Craigieburn through arrays of bike lanes, bike path and back streets! I must admit I had no idea where I was until we hit Roxburgh Park. (We rode back from Docklands via Royal Park, West Brunswick Shimmy, a similar route to Moreland's proposed route of Coburg to Glenroy, and some of the Craigieburn Rail Trail.)
The highlight of the ride, (while passing through Royal Park Golf Course) watching Kevin in front of me pointing his index finger upward toward a magpie on a wire, soon after the magpie attempted emergency landing on Kevin's helmet for more than 4 times, lucky for Kevin Mr Pie aborted the landings attempts after 300 meters. (I took the hits for you, Bill, and distracted the bird so it wouldn't swoop you!)

Craigieburn Family Ride

The Hume buggies did it again, they braved the cold drizzly weather to enjoy the outdoors of our neighborhood.
a special welcome to our first timers, Wayne, Pam, their son and Alex.
Alex rode in the wet weather from Coburg to join us for the ride in Craigieburn, good effort Alex!
Iain our local riding chmapion, rode from Gladstone Park, ba...ttling a northerly head wind and spray.
Everyone made it in just in time for the ride.
we started by heading west and slightly south on the Aitken creek path, it was little challenging to manage the crossing of Bridgewater road but we did it safely, however shortly after that i came of my bike and injured my pride not to mention bruised knees and elbows.

We stopped at the water front cafe for well earned refreshment then we embarked on the challenging tracks of Craigieburn "most of the curb side paths were under construction.

Eventually we made back on the Malcolm Creek path, as we cross the pedestrian bridge, the hawk eyes of our football enthusiast “Wayne”spotted a Sherin ball floating in the lake beneath.
The brave heart "Wayne" quickly stripped of his cloth and jumped in the freezing water and chased after the trophy of the day. Well done Wayne, your ride paid good dividend.

Shortly after the Sherin incident Anita, Steve, Wayne, Pam and their kids peeled off from the group to go home.

The elite athletes Iain and Alex rode back south with screaming tail wind pushing them along. I suspect they would have broken the sound barrier multiple times.

Shortly after Kevin, Graham, his son and I return to the starting point.
Good effort from all participants.
A special thanks to Kevin for helping me with this ride. Thank you all for your patience with me. This was the first ride I ever led, excuse my sloppy leadership skills

3 Creeks Ride

Its that time of year again when the cream of Melbourne's social set gather to celebrate Christmas in July at the Melbourne Airport Club. As usual the men worked up to the elite dance level slowly over the course of the evening to ultimately display their colourful plumage and carefully choreographed dance moves in an attempt to catch the eye of a prospective mate. As usual I was pleasantly surprised at just how well I danced, an opinion not necessarily shared by my discerning wife. And I just got better and better as the night progressed.

Swaying skillfully through the car-park of luxury vehicles in the wee hours I tossed up whether to go home and change into my knicks or go straight to the start point as is, but chose the former. The alarm went off just moments after I hit the pillow. I awoke to the rythmic beat of my heart. It felt like a black smiths hammer on the anvil of my head. I prayed in vain for inclement weather.

8.30 am at the old Katrina Drive Kinda for a 9.00am start. Kevin was first to arrive followed by Bill and Phillip. Frank from Team MooneeBUG was a last minute wild card entrant that performed extremely well over the arduous course. The English team arrived together in their funny imported support vehicle just before the ride began. The French team was unable to attend as they also had a small local ride called The Tour De France which apparently is a race of sorts. With the cream of English riders out here to participate in the HumeBUG event, I don't hold much hope for the British contingent on the Tour. There were 7 riders in all.

While riding along the magnificent Yarra river, we stopped at Collingwood Children's Farm for muffins and scones then said hello to the chickens and donkeys before continuing on to Docklands. Here we tucked into Monster Burgers and hot chocolate. One rider had purchased an air-horn from Chain Reaction and brought it along for our entertainment. Pumped up with the bike pump it produces a sound akin to a VLine train. It proved very effective at scaring off untethered dogs and those with iPod speakers stuck in their ears. It also proved a very effective laxative when it went off without notice.

Today was Phillips first ride in two months following a serious crash on the steep detour around the ring-road extension. At which time he required an ambulance to extract him and administer aid. It was noted that being a member of Bicycle Victoria provides free insurance in the form of legal advice for its members.

The ride took us approximately 4+ hours. We were slowed up on the way home by a refreshing light head wind along the Moonee Ponds Creek. The rain threatened to start on many occasions but in the long run we escaped with dry saddles. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I look forward to our next ride on July 17th. This will be the Aitken Creek Ride of 14km which is considered a beginners/family ride.

Aitken Creek Loop Ride 19/6/2011

On a Sunday morning that was becoming windier, 14 cyclists, which includes 6 children on their own bikes, departed from the old Craigieburn Library through the Leisure Centre and Craigieburn Gardens to Aitken Creek. Following the conventional route around the golf course, we rode on the southern side of Aitken Creek across grass and muddy tracks and local roads, crossing the Aitken Boulevard road reservation, collecting heaps of mud on some bikes and more mud on shoes. After a brief climb and look over Mt Aitken (it’s really only a little hill), we rode down against a very strong wind and around to Highlands Lake, where it was decided to stop for a rest break.
After a refreshing cuppa (and cake, or toasted sandwich, or whatever we happened to order) in the heated environs of the Waterside Cafe, we remounted our steeds and proceeded up Waterview Boulevard and Aitken Boulevard to Malcolm Creek. The new section of the upper Malcolm Creek Path was open, so we decided to detour and rode along this to the top of Grand Boulevard, where we pondered whether the construction was of a hotel, supermarket or 22 stores.
The path along Grand Boulevard is wide enough to be a shared path, so we proceeded along the path to Hanson Rd where some of the group departed to their nearby homes. A bit further beyond was reconstruction of the footpath, possibly an upgrade to a shared path along Hanson Rd as a continuation of the Hanson Rd bike lane. On bypassing the construction we proceeded through to the noisewall beside Hume Highway and mad our way onto Hamilton St. Near the Plaza, another cyclist departed to go home. The remaining cyclists crossed Craigieburn Road and rode down Hardy Street and approached the Craigieburn Gardens by the rear.
By now, the wind was very strong and would help some of the group to ride home in personal best times! Other cyclists, though, had to ride against it.
It was an enjoyable ride, if a bit windy and cold at first.

HumeBug Ride 5th June

Nine Cyclists met at the Westmeadows Bakery on a cold Sunday morning. Nine cyclists left at 9.am and rode along the bike path and turned off at Gladstone Park. After reaching Carrick Drive the nine cyclists became seven.
Seven cyclists headed out of Gladstone Park towards the Maribynong River at a medium pace of 25kph. As we rode alongside the river we found lots of other cyclists doing the same. After reaching Footscray Road Iain and Neil turned off and headed towards the city. Seven cyclists became five.
Five cyclists headed down Hyde St towards Williamstown. Upon arriving we had a short break, a coffee and a chat. We left Williamstown and headed back towards Footscray Rd where we turned off and rode towards Docklands. Five cyclists became four as Gavin headed towards the city while the others headed towards the Moonee Ponds bike path. The wind had ramped up by this time but the choice of bike path provided us with a break from the wind. The four cyclists arrived back at Gladstone Park at approx 1.00pm. All up the journey was approx 70km.

Broadmeadows Valley Park Ride Report

15th May 2011

The day was cold and cloudy, but thankfully, following the week of heavy rain, the paths were dry. The cyclists began arriving at the library, all rugged up against the cold. Eventually, six adults and six children were ready to leave on the adventure. Despite the sealed paths being dry, it was decided to detour around the few short dirt tracks on the route to avoid muddy sections.

We departed the library, riding along the newly sealed path in Craigieburn Gardens down to Aitken Creek. At Hothlyn Drive, we detoured to Mitford Crescent and worked our way through the residential roads and short path sections to the pipeline boundary of Craigieburn and Roxburgh Park suburbs, at Zambezi Court to avoid the first dirt section. At this point, we rode along the path that follows the railway line to near Roxburgh Park Station.

There was another dirt section at the station that we detoured around, and we rode behind the Roxburgh Park Shopping Centre to Reservoir Drive. It was not busy, being a Sunday morning, so we rode on road to Shankland Boulevard where we came upon the Shankland-Tarcoola Reserve. This has a narrow asphalt path bordered with bricks, which we followed down past Meadow Heights Primary School to Meadow Heights Shopping Centre.

We made our way past the new playground at the soon-to-be-named Resologlu Reserve, and had some difficulty crossing Malmsbury Drive due to the parked vehicles of church-attendees. Considerate drivers gave way to us, allowing us to cross the road and proceed to Buchan Street Reserve, which has a Community Centre, playground and skate park. A wide path commences here proceeding all the way to Broadmeadows Valley Park, passing Bethal Primary School and crossing Barry Rd with a pedestrian refuge.

It was an easy ride down to Yuroke Creek, but the ride up to Erinbank Crescent on the other side was a big challenge for the children. Most of the cyclists therefore walked up the hill, along the Erinbank Crescent footpath to the top of the hill. After a short on-road section, we entered the Attwood Creek Path which led us to Moonee Ponds Creek near the Westmeadows Bakery. We arrived safely, after having ridden 15 km in just under one and a half hours.

At the bakery, we relaxed drinking our coffees and dining on our sweets, and relieving ourselves of a liquid load. One of the cyclists decided to leave from here, but as we were heading in the same direction, down the Moonee Ponds Creek Path for nearly a kilometre, we all left together.

Jacana Reserve was the start of the Broadmeadows Valley Path, which we were to follow all the way to Craigieburn. It was a hard ride for some of the children, being generally a slight uphill ride, and the group soon parted: two quicker riders made their way out in front, while the rest ambled along. At Shankland Boulevard playground, the main group stopped for 10 minutes to give the children a breather. We had travelled 7.2 km in just over half an hour.

Continuing on, we had a short hard climb, with a few minutes rest at the top of the hill at The Shankland Reserve just over Somerton Rd. We again mounted our bikes and continued.

We rode through the tunnel under Donald Cameron Drive to the St Clair Reserve Lake and, lo and behold, the two quicker cyclists were sitting on the grass waiting patiently for us to catch up to them. They were turning off here, so we said our goodbyes and continued towards Craigieburn.

At Fairways Boulevard, beside the Craigieburn Golf Course, an adult rider with two children parted ways. The other two adults and 4 children continued to Aitken Creek, across Bridgewater Rd to Craigieburn Gardens and up to Craigieburn Library. The third leg had been 9.2 km in just over one hour.

All up, the BUG had travelled 31.4 km in three hours, with ¾ hour time at the bakery and ten minutes at the playground. The ride to Westmeadows was described as "interesting" which is an interesting way of describing it. Many drivers were very considerate of the group. However, there were some sections that had lots of broken glass on the path.

Aitken Creek Loop Ride

It was a glorious sunny Sunday for the Hume BUG Aitken Creek Loop Ride as 10 adults and five children cyclists met outside the old Craigieburn Library. After quick catchup discussions we rolled off through Craigieburn Gardens to the creek path. Being Sunday morning it was easy enough crossing Bridgewater Road, and we continued on towards the Golf Course and rode around it on a mix of local roads and wide footpaths.

The Aitken Boulevard road reservation was problematical to cross. Some works along there have created muddy tracks. We managed to cross but caked our bikes in mud in the process!

There were not many birds to be seen at the bird watching area, so we continued under Waterview Blvd and Craigieburn Road. The sight of Highlands Lake was breathtaking as we rode up the incline from under Craigieburn Road. Our destination was the Waterside Cafe on the other side of the lake. After some refreshments and a period of relaxation, we lined up for a group photo and took off around the lake for the next leg of our adventure.

We aimed our bikes up Waterview Blvd toward the new Craigieburn West Primary School, then across to Aitken Blvd and the wide footpath up to Highgate Recreation Reserve. We circled the reserve, watching a game of footy on Oval 2 as we rode along. We soon made it to Malcolm Creek and proceeded along the path. Near Hanson Rd, a decision was made to continue to Bunnings for a photo opportunity with the 2010 AFL Premiership Cup (won by Collingwood), however a couple decided to part and go their own way.

We crossed the Hume Highway at the signalised intersection with Grand Blvd pass the start of the Galada Tamboore Path that follows the Hume Freeway to the Western Ring Road. The footpath along Amaroo Rd provided an off-road route into the Bunnings car park, where we managed to safely avoid the cars and parked our dozen bikes at the store entrance. Many people were obviously Pies supporters, wearing Collingwood guernseys and other black and white clothing. A small queue quickly disappeared and some of the BUG cyclists huddled in front of a team photo back drop and the children held the Premiership Cup for a photo.

Several of the cyclists decided to part here. Some stayed to chat with friends who happened to be there, while others decided to ride along the Galada Tamboore Path to get home. The remaining few cyclists continued back to Hanson Rd and made their way along Hamilton St to Craigieburn Rd back to the start point at the library.

It was an enjoyable 20km ride by 15 cyclists in beautiful sunny weather who are now looking forward to other family rides.

MAD Ride 2011

The MAD ride put on by the Melbourne Bicycle Touring Club has come and gone for yet another year.
Sunday April 10th, 20011

Driving into Woodend the sight of Mt Macedon sobered our thoughts, its peaks were hidden in cloud. A light drizzle settled on the windscreen. As I parked the car and headed for the registration desk a light katabatic breeze brought with it a numbing cold. Greg (HumeBUG) and I met at the registration desk where he elected to do the 120k ride and me the 65. There was nervous chatter all around me coupled with the sharp smell of liniment. Those waiting in the Que debated each other the possibility of a wet and miserable morning. It was becoming increasingly more difficult to blink. My eyelids were frozen to my eyeballs.
Peter from BrimbankBUG found me and introduced himself, and then to the rest of his group as they arrived. We were soon heading towards the start point. Making our way up the shallow hill and out of Woodend I immediately started to warm up. Soon Keynton was also behind us and we were approaching the Lorinston Town Hall. Andrew (BrimBUG) and I discussed what we had ordered for lunch. I was looking forward to the Barramundi fillet and Andrew, the rib eye steak in red wine juss. Walking into the hall and up to the table we settled for a salad roll and blueberry muffin. Never has a salad roll tasted so good. Warm rays from the winter sun began to heat the air. In the back of everyone's thoughts though, the long climb ahead. Leaving Lauriston then turning left, the long grind up Shepherd's Hill began. We all made it to the top at our own pace but were relieved to get there nonetheless. It was nowhere near as difficult as I had remembered. The views from here to the Lauriston Reservoir were stunning. Last year during the drought the Dam slipway was dry, but not today.
Finally a welcome tail wind sprung up to see us home.
It was another great ride in good company. I can't wait to do it all again next year.
Hopefully more of the Hume BUGers will be able to join us.
(Max speed 108 KPH - forgot to turn off the GPS for the drive home)

Merri Creek, Yarra, City Ride

Post-mortem
Merri Creek, Yarra, City Ride
Sunday 3rd April, 2011

9.00am Sunday morning in the cold Melbourne dawn, 10 elite cyclists were champing at the bit.
The somber scene was unfolding at the West Meadows Bakery.
Some sipped coffee while others were unloading bikes from utes. Others were carefully checking their Kit.
As the glow of the sun's first rays began to heat the cold air, a mounting excitement was becoming palpable.

Ten riders arrived and 9 departed (1 forgot his lid) for Western RIng Trail.
The pull up out of the Valley along the new Detour reduced some to Shank's Pony while others (me) just wanted to throw up.
That behind us, we stopped at the Merri Creek junction to meet another group from BrimbankBUG.
Sadly they were ten minutes behind us and stayed that way for the duration.

1 hour 45mins later we climbed up from the Yarra river and went down Victoria Street to the Bicycle Swap Meet.
Here we perused the many bikes and parts that were on offer then attacked the sausage sizzle.
Back onto the Yarra we headed along its scenic vistas to arrive at Southbank for Coffee.
From here we headed to Dockands and off home along the Moonee Ponds Creek.
All in all, a leisurely 75K scenic ride.

Woodend Ride 6th March 2011

Glorious day for a ride. Sunny with a northerly wind to push us all the way home.
Five riders met at Woodend station. Kevin, Steve, Graham, Bill and Greg. We departed at approximately 10.00am and started off at a brisk pace along Black Forrest Rd. Breeze at our backs we left Woodend in the dust. Half way down the road Steve comes to a sudden halt. Turns out his computer could'nt stand the pace so it jumped off into the bushes along the side of the road. Fortunately eagle eye Graham found it so no damage done. Continuing on at an unrelenting pace it was'nt long before we reached Riddells Creek. Unfortunately Steve's rear tube decided to get a puncture. A quick repair job and it was into the Riddells Creek bakery for coffee and cake.
Some 30 minutes later and feeling recharged we sped off at a quick pace down Sutherlands Rd.
Two hills along Konagaderra were no match for the 5 riders and soon we reached the roundabout at Mickelham Rd where Greg turned off and the other 4 riders continued on to Craigieburn.

Sunday, February 6, 2011

Sunday 7th Feb.
Eight riders met at Westmeadows bakery. Gavin, Bill, Anita, Paul, Phil, Iain, Dennis and Greg. We took the Moonee Valley path where we connected up with the Western Ring Rd path and eventually the Maribynong River path. Rode into Docklands where we stopped for coffee and muffins. After the break Gavin headed off, Bill and Anita decided to take a train back to Broadmeadows and the remainder made there way home via the Moonee Ponds creek trail. Fortunately the weather held out and nobody got wet. Photo's have been uploaded to the album.
Next ride 27th Feb.
